In an exciting development, Michael Cera is making a return alongside Sex Bob-Omb, this time in an animated adaptation, titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, set to premiere on Netflix. The series, consisting of eight episodes, is being produced by animation studio Science Saru and continues the beloved narrative of Scott Pilgrim, the bass-playing protagonist, as he navigates his band’s battles and confronts his exes.
The upcoming Netflix show serves as a follow-up to Edgar Wright’s 2010 action-packed romantic comedy, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which was originally inspired by Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series.
In a notable casting choice, the majority of animated characters in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off retain their voices from the 2010 film. This impressive lineup includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead reprising her role as Ramona, Kieran Culkin voicing Wallace Wells, Chris Evans embodying Lucas Lee, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves, Satya Bhabha portraying Matthew Patel, Brie Larson as Natalie V. Envy Adams, Aubrey Plaza lending her voice to Julie Powers, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, Alison Pill embodying Kim Pine, Johnny Simmons returning as Neil, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Mae Whitman as Roxie Richter, and Anna Kendrick voicing Stacey Pilgrim.
Fortunately, the ensemble of the Scott Pilgrim crew developed into a tightly-knit family, nurturing friendships that have endured over time, remarked Wright in March. He further shared that an email thread involving the entire cast, which originated in 2010, has persisted throughout the years. The gratifying news of the continuation of the adventure was shared with all, marking a heartening reunion. Observing and hearing each individual effortlessly step back into their respective roles has been an absolute delight for Wright.
O’Malley chimed in with his perspective, describing the upcoming series as a blend of humor and emotion, coupled with captivating visuals. He enthusiastically mentioned that the action sequences are bound to be mind-blowing while teasing the possibility of a few unexpected twists along the journey.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, produced under UCP, features a script crafted by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, who are also taking on the roles of showrunners. Overseeing the series’ direction is Abel Gongora from Science Saru, while the roster of executive producers includes O’Malley, Grabinski, Wright, Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, Adam Siegel, Michael Bacall, Nira Park, and Eunyoung Choi. The highly anticipated show is scheduled to debut on November 17th, exclusively on Netflix.
