Mike White’s series, “The White Lotus,” won the 2023 Golden Globe award for Best Limited Series, marking White’s first win in that category.
At the start of his speech, White quipped that he had planned to give his acceptance speech in Italian, but he said he got too drunk because there was no food available. He then went on to express how touched he was by Jennifer Coolidge’s speech, as the actress’s win for her role in the second season of the HBO series had brought him to tears.

“We pursued the show we wanted to do with Jennifer, and everyone turned it down,” White said to the Hollywood crowd of stars, referring to roles in The White Lotus. “I know you all passed. You all passed on this show. And so yes, it’s very gratifying to have this moment.”
During his speech, the show creator also expressed gratitude towards his Italian cast and crew, saying, “You had to be there, but the experience was amazing.”
The White Lotus won the Golden Globe for best-limited series, beating out competition from Black Bird, Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, The Dropout and Pam & Tommy. Actors Paul Walter Hauser from Black Bird, Jennifer Coolidge from The White Lotus, Amanda Seyfried from The Dropout and Evan Peters from Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story also won Golden Globes in the limited series categories.
The White Lotus, an anthology series, received four nominations at the 2023 Golden Globes for its second season. Jennifer Coolidge received her second nomination for her role as Tanya McQuoid, and newcomers Aubrey Plaza and F. Murray Abraham were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Actor, respectively. The show’s second season follows the stories of guests over a week in the White Lotus’ Sicily location as darker aspects of the travellers emerge.
This year’s Golden Globe awards marked the event’s return to NBC; it was held after the Los Angeles Times published an exposé revealing that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had no Black members and that it engaged in questionable financial practices and unethical behaviour conduct.
After the revelation of the exposé, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) reported that it had taken steps to address the issues brought to light, including hiring 21 U.S.-based journalists working for outlets abroad, introducing multiple reforms, and adding 103 internationally based voters.
Jerrod Carmichael was the host of the 2023 Golden Globe awards broadcast on NBC.
