Hollywood got interested in the GameStop story from the 2020s, and now they’ve made a big movie called “Dumb Money,” which came out in theaters on September 15, 2023. Will it be on Netflix? Yes, but the timing depends on where you live.
The movie, directed by Craig Gillespie, is based on a real story about someone important in the GameStop situation that shook the stock market and made big news for a long time. It’s a showdown between Keith Gill and the wealthy Wall Street investors and big institutions.
In addition to Paul Dano, this movie also features a talented cast including Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen.
The movie is coming to theaters in the US in two stages, as stated on the Sony Pictures website. It will first premiere in selected theaters on September 15th and then have a wider release on September 29th.
After the movie was shown at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), it received mostly positive reviews from various sources. However, there might be potential legal issues in the coming weeks and months because Ken Giffin, portrayed by Nick Offerman in the film, is apparently unhappy with how he is depicted and has hired public relations experts to handle the situation.
When will Dumb Money be on Netflix in the US?
Let’s start with the United States, where Netflix has an agreement with Sony that lasts through all of 2023. Under this agreement, many Sony movies are made available on Netflix US for 18 months after they are initially released.
As we’ve mentioned before, Sony movies typically arrive on Netflix around 120 days after they are shown in theaters, although sometimes it can take a bit longer.
Since this movie has two different release dates in theaters, we estimate that it might appear on Netflix either on January 13th, 2024, or January 27th, 2024, at the earliest. It could potentially be a little later, but we’ll keep you updated on this post and in our “coming soon” section as soon as we have more information.
Will Dumb Money be on Netflix Internationally?
Most Netflix regions will probably have the movie in the next few years, but not all of them will get it at the same time as Netflix in the United States.
Netflix in India, like in the US, usually gets Sony movies in the “Pay-1” window, so they can expect to see it very early in 2024.
A few months after that, more Asian countries will likely get the movie, and some countries in central Europe, such as Germany and The Netherlands, will get it in late spring or early summer 2024.
In the United Kingdom, Sony movies typically come to Netflix after they’ve been on Sky/Now, which takes about two years. So, Dumb Money won’t be available on Netflix UK until sometime in 2025.
For Canada and countries in Latin America, they typically have to wait for three years for Sony Pictures movies. This means that Dumb Money won’t be available for streaming in these regions until at least 2026.
