Two years after the tragic events at Astroworld, Travis Scott is finally talking about the incident where 10 people died due to a crowd surge during one of his concerts.
In a recent interview with GQ, the “Goosebumps” rapper, who was on stage when the tragedy occurred, spoke up about the impact on families and the city. When asked if he planned to address the incident on his Grammy-nominated album, Utopia, Scott explained that making music allows him to reflect on life experiences.
He acknowledged the devastation caused by the event and shared that returning to music production became a therapeutic way to channel his energy into finishing the album, even though it took him several months to get back into it.
Thinking back to the time after the tragedy, Travis Scott shared that he felt extremely devastated. He expressed that he constantly reflects on it, emphasizing how much his fans mean to him by describing them as family.
During the outdoor festival in Houston on November 5, 2021, a crowd surge occurred, resulting in the tragic deaths of 10 concertgoers aged 9 to 27. Out of the 50,000 people present, hundreds were injured, with around 300 receiving treatment for injuries and 11 experiencing cardiac arrest.
Travis Scott indirectly refers to this incident in the song “My Eyes” from the album Utopia. He explains that the track represents the daily challenges he faces and how these struggles might be misunderstood, capturing the weight of life’s constant pressures.
In the closing verse of the song, Scott raps about replaying those nights and being surrounded by a sea of people who support him. He expresses a desire for the audience to understand the lengths he would go to, even jumping off the stage, to save a child if they only knew.
Travis Scott shared that the lyrics for “My Eyes” were spontaneous and came from a real and emotional moment while he was writing. He expressed to GQ that the song holds deep meaning for him and is one of his favourites on the album.
In addition to the personal connection, Scott hopes that fans take away something important from the track – an understanding that he, too, experiences pain, and concerns, and thinks about everyday issues. He emphasizes his desire for change and self-improvement, highlighting that he goes through challenges like everyone else, even something recent that he couldn’t have imagined.
When the Astroworld incident occurred, Scott expressed devastation on Twitter and pledged cooperation with the Houston Police Department.
In a subsequent Instagram Story, he mentioned working to support the affected families, emphasizing the significance of his fans and his commitment to providing them with positive experiences.
