Unattached relationships without any strings attached often unfold differently than anticipated, as demonstrated by Sky’s latest comedy series, “Smothered.”
Is the concept of a commitment-free relationship feasible? This is the inquiry at the heart of the recently launched Sky Original comedy series, “Smothered.” The show, now airing on Sky Comedy, features Danielle Vitalis and Tom Pointing from “Plebs” as the protagonists navigating a supposedly casual romantic involvement that takes an unexpected turn when one of them unveils a hidden truth.
Crafted by Canadian screenwriter Monica Heisey, known for her work on the immensely popular comedy “Schitt’s Creek” starring Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, the series is a nostalgic nod to the classic British romantic comedy. According to the creator, “I grew up immersed in the world of great British rom-coms, so the opportunity to create one myself has always intrigued me. When Emma Lawson and Rough Cut approached me with the concept for ‘Smothered,’ I found it both compelling and a unique entry point into the genre that I hadn’t encountered before.”
“I envisioned a classic rom-com reminiscent of my favorites from the 80s and 90s, one that begins with chemistry and allows two individuals to repeatedly come together and drift apart in a hopefully enjoyable manner. We’ve gone through numerous descriptions to get to this point.
“I would describe it as silly, sweet, and a bit sexy—a contemporary love story that explores all the ways life can complicate romance, even when everyone involved has the best intentions,” revealed Heisey in an interview with Sky. When discussing the main characters, Heisey further commented, “I truly believe Jon and Danielle embody a modern-day Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. They are incredibly charming and effortlessly captivating. I think viewers are going to fall for them, big time!”

Sammy, a strong-willed young woman fed up with dating apps and immature men, crosses paths with Tom, a settled man with a warm heart and some baggage. After a night of singing their hearts out in a karaoke booth, they decide on a no-strings-attached affair for three weeks, with the condition of never speaking again.
Initially a seemingly straightforward arrangement of great sex and casual fun, complications arise when sparks fly between them. However, Sammy discovers a surprising twist—Tom has a six-year-old daughter named Ellie.
