The live-action TV adaptation of One Piece has achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing the previous record set by Netflix’s popular series, Stranger Things. The show had an incredibly successful premiere last week, receiving high praise from critics and garnering a massive viewership. It has now claimed the top spot as the most-watched show in 84 countries, outperforming Stranger Things season 4 and the debut season of Wednesday, both of which held the No. 1 position in only 83 territories during their initial weekends.

One Piece, adapted from Eiichiro Oda’s 1997 manga of the same name, centers on a group of pirates on a quest for the legendary One Piece treasure. The series features Iñaki Godoy in the role of Monkey D. Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, and Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro.

Following its debut, a discussion with some of the show’s directors shed light on their creative process. Marc Jobst, drawing from his experience working on Daredevil, explained how it aided in establishing a “playful” tone. He emphasized the importance of grounding the story in truth and characters’ relationships, rather than approaching it solely as a fantasy director crafting extravagant characters.
In a glowing five-star review of One Piece, it was stated: “The inaugural eight-episode season presents a captivating blend of humor, adventure, action, and suspense, all anchored by an overwhelming sense of joy.
“This joy takes center stage throughout the series, radiating while simultaneously offering a fresh perspective on a beloved story.”
One Piece can be streamed on Netflix starting now.
