Netflix has confirmed that they’re making a second season of the popular live-action version of the manga “One Piece.” The announcement came directly from Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the series, on social media. He expressed his happiness with how the first season was received and shared that Netflix has decided to continue the adventures of the live-action Straw Hat crew.
Oda told fans that it will be some time before they can expect the scripts for Season 2, and he’s asking for their understanding and patience. However, there’s some good news as there’s already a plan in place for Season 2, with a basic idea of where the story will go. Right now, the writing of the scripts is temporarily paused because of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.
“We work closely with Netflix, the manga publisher Shueisha, and Oda-san, the manga creator, in our decision-making process. We’ve had detailed discussions about what we would do in Season 2, and we’ve had lighter talks about where we could take the story in seasons three to six,” explained One Piece executive producer Becky Clements in an interview with Deadline. “Our main focus is preserving the essential parts of the manga that fans love. These are the stories and characters that we can’t compromise on, and that’s our guiding principle as we plan for future seasons. It will involve many discussions, but we’re fortunate to have a roadmap.”
This news comes right after One Piece’s second week at the top of Netflix’s charts, both nationally and internationally. Since its debut on August 31, the series has gained a lot of attention, accumulating over 38 million views in less than two weeks. This success is a significant achievement for Netflix, and the show has also generated a lot of buzz on social media, suggesting that it might become one of Netflix’s all-time most popular TV series.
One Piece, based on Oda’s manga, follows the exciting adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they travel to mysterious islands and vast oceans in search of the ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King.
The main characters, the Straw Hat crew, are portrayed by actors such as Mackenyu (Roronoa Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp), and Taz Skylar (Sanji).
The cast also includes other talented actors like McKinley Belcher III, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Vincent Regan, Jeff Ward, Craig Fairbrass, Langley Kirkwood, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Chioma Umeala, and Steven Ward.
The series is created and written by Steven Maeda and Matt Owens, who also serve as executive producers and showrunners. Oda, Marty Adelstein, and Becky Clements are also executive producers.
“One Piece” is produced through a partnership between Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and Shueisha.
