Actor Chris Pine, known for his role as Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman franchise, recently expressed his surprise and disappointment at the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3. This decision comes amidst a major shakeup at DC Studios, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, which has left the future of the beloved superhero franchise uncertain.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, Chris Pine revealed his astonishment upon learning that Wonder Woman 3 was canceled. Pine, who played the role of Steve Trevor in the first two installments of the franchise, expressed his disbelief at the studio’s decision to abandon a billion-dollar franchise.

Reflecting on his involvement in the Wonder Woman series, Pine shared insights into his initial reservations about the role of Steve Trevor. He admitted that he had initially hesitated to play the character, feeling concerned about being relegated to the role of a mere love interest. However, director Patty Jenkins’ vision for the character as a central figure in a romantic storyline akin to “Casablanca” ultimately convinced him to take on the role.

    The Fate of Steve Trevor

Despite his initial reluctance, Pine’s portrayal of Steve Trevor became integral to the success of the Wonder Woman films. However, with the character meeting his demise in the first film and returning briefly in the sequel, Pine acknowledges that his character’s story arc has reached its conclusion. He dismisses the idea of Steve Trevor returning, stating that it would be “ridiculous” to attempt to bring him back from the dead.

    DC’s Overhaul

The cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 is just one of the many changes taking place at DC Studios under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The duo, known for their work on successful projects such as “The Suicide Squad,” have initiated a significant overhaul of the DC Comics Extended Universe (DCEU). This includes introducing new characters and storylines, leaving Wonder Woman and other established franchises in limbo.

    Patty Jenkins’ Perspective

Director Patty Jenkins, who helmed the first two Wonder Woman films, has also weighed in on the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3. During an appearance on the “Talking Pictures” podcast, Jenkins expressed her understanding of the studio’s decision, acknowledging the challenges faced by DC Studios amidst the ongoing changes. She indicated that while she had been developing a third Wonder Woman film with Gal Gadot, the project is no longer moving forward at this time.

Despite the setback with Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins remains committed to her creative endeavors. She has shifted her focus to other projects, including her upcoming film set within the Star Wars universe, titled “Rogue Squadron.” Jenkins’ return to the Star Wars franchise marks a new chapter in her career, offering fans of her work something to look forward to amid the uncertainty surrounding Wonder Woman.

The cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 marks a significant turning point for the beloved superhero franchise. With key players like Chris Pine and Patty Jenkins expressing their surprise and disappointment, fans are left wondering about the future of Wonder Woman on the big screen. As DC Studios undergoes a major overhaul, the fate of Wonder Woman and other iconic characters hangs in the balance.
