During Netflix’s Tudum event on Saturday, actor Chris Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave announced that the popular action franchise “Extraction” will be receiving a third instalment. This news comes shortly after the premiere of “Extraction 2” on June 16.
The first two films revolve around the character Tyler Rake (played by Hemsworth), a black ops mercenary. In the first film, Tyler embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue the son of an Indian crime lord, which pushes him to the brink of death. In “Extraction 2,” Tyler is seen recovering from his previous assignment but chooses to undertake another perilous task to save the family of a renowned Georgian gangster.
Hargrave, who made his directorial debut with the first “Extraction,” has also contributed his expertise in stunts to the franchise’s second film. Fans were amazed by the sequel’s use of a continuous shot for a thrilling 21-minute action sequence.
Hemsworth, Hargrave, Patrick Newall, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Eric Gitter, Peter Schwerin, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo, collectively known as the Russo Brothers, produced “Extraction 2.” Benjamin Grayson, Steven Scavelli, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, and Jake Aust served as executive producers.
The first film of the franchise was based on the graphic novel “Ciudad” by Ande Parks and adapted by Parks and the Russo brothers. Joe Russo returned to “Extraction 2” and took on the role of the sequel’s screenwriter.
When the initial film premiered in April 2020, it quickly became the most-watched original film premiere in Netflix’s history, attracting 99 million households within its first four weeks of release. It also re-entered the Top 10 during the Fourth of July weekend, securing its position as the fourth most-watched streaming film of 2020.
Both “Extraction” and “Extraction 2” are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
