Showtime has announced that the popular series “Billions” will conclude with its seventh season. The show, which premiered on the premium cable network in 2016, delves into the realms of high finance and politics. Season 7 will consist of 12 episodes and will premiere on Paramount+ alongside Showtime on August 11. The linear debut on Showtime is scheduled for August 13 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Chris McCarthy, President & CEO of Showtime, MTV Entertainment Studios, and Paramount Media Networks, expressed his admiration for the show’s exploration of power, money, and greed. McCarthy also highlighted the creative talents of Brian and David, the masterminds behind the series, and praised the final season for its captivating dialogue and character dynamics. The partnership aims to transform “Billions” into a global franchise.
During an appearance on NBC Sports Chicago’s Football Night in Chicago, Dan Soder, who has portrayed Mafee on the drama series “Billions” since its inception, inadvertently disclosed that the show would be concluding. He stated, “Season seven, the final season of ‘Billions,’ on its way. Am I not supposed to say that? I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that.”
The talented cast of the long-running series includes Paul Giamatti, Corey Stoll, Asia Kate Dillon, Maggie Siff, David Costabile, Condola Rashad, Kelly AuCoin, and Jeffrey DeMunn. Damian Lewis, who portrayed Bobby Axelrod for the first five seasons, had previously been announced to return for half of Season 7. The show was created by Brian Koppelman, David Levien, and Andrew Ross Sorkin, with Koppelman and Levien serving as executive producers and co-showrunners. Beth Schacter also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer.
The decision to conclude the series is not entirely unexpected. Showtime’s parent company, Paramount, is in the process of rebranding the premium cable network as Paramount+ With Showtime, and several shows have been canceled shortly after the rebrand was announced. However, there are multiple spinoffs of “Billions” in development, overseen by executive producers Koppelman, Levien, and Paul Schiff. These spinoffs, including “Billions: Miami,” “Billions: London,” “Millions,” and “Trillions,” are part of President & CEO Chris McCarthy’s strategy to build franchises around established Paramount intellectual property, similar to the success achieved with “Yellowstone.”
