The premium cable network, previously known as Epix, has officially confirmed the renewal of the sci-fi drama series featuring Stephan James and Lena Headey for a second season.
This announcement coincides with the completion of the first season by MGM+, created by Zak Penn, who also released a teaser for the upcoming season of Beacon 23. Originally developed for Spectrum Originals, the series, which had initially secured a second window on AMC, had both seasons filmed consecutively.
Michael Wright, the head of MGM+, expressed excitement about the adaptation of Hugh Howey’s bestselling book by the creative team, describing the series as a journey into the suspenseful and emotionally charged universe of Beacon 23.
Season two, under the leadership of showrunners Glen Mazzara and Joy Blake, will feature returning cast members Stephan James, Natasha Mumba, and Ellen Wong. Boat Rocker serves as the studio for the drama, with an executive producer lineup including Mazzara, Blake, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, James Middleton, Nick Nantell, Katie O’Connell Marsh, Liz Varner, and lead actor Stephan James.
Fortier and Schneeberg, co-executive chairmen at Boat Rocker Media and co-chairmen of Boat Rocker Studios, expressed gratitude for the loyal audience on MGM+ and anticipated sharing more episodes with fans in 2024. Season one followed the intertwined fates of Aster (played by Lena Headey), a government agent, and Halan (played by Stephan James), a stoic ex-military man, trapped together inside one of the Beacons, which functioned as intergalactic lighthouses. MGM+ describes season two as presenting Beacon 23 as more of a prison with Aleph onboard, raising more questions than answers with The Artifact. The inhabitants of Beacon 23, lacking a clear path forward, must rely on each other while navigating conflicting agendas.
Showrunner Glen Mazzara emphasized that season two of Beacon 23 will elevate the stakes with more action, mysteries, twists, and the introduction of exciting new characters. Joy Blake expressed gratitude to MGM+ for the opportunity to continue telling the stories of characters whose lives are intricately connected by a place few understand, and none can ever leave.
Beacon 23 joins MGM+’s scripted roster alongside other series like Godfather of Harlem, From, Billy the Kid, The Winter King, and A Spy Among Friends.
