“Barbie” will soon be available for streaming on Max directly from your Dreamhouse (or Mojo Dojo Casa House).
Max has officially announced the release date of Greta Gerwig’s dazzling pink fantasy comedy for December 15, a few months following its theatrical debut on July 21. The streaming service will also offer an American Sign Language version of the film.
With a staggering global box office revenue exceeding $1.4 billion, “Barbie” not only stands as the highest-grossing film of 2023 but also claims the title of Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing movie in history. The narrative follows Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the Stereotypical Barbie, accompanied by Ryan Gosling’s Ken, as they embark on an adventure beyond Barbieland into the real world, where encounters with Mattel executives and the realities of womanhood await. The star-studded cast includes Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, and Issa Rae.
“Barbie” made its mark on the music charts with chart-toppers like Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and, of course, Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken,” the film’s extravagant dance sequence. All three songs are contenders for Oscar recognition.
Incorporating input from the Deaf community and guidance from community leaders, the ASL version of “Barbie” was crafted for Max, featuring ASL performer Leila Hanaumi. It will be uniquely presented in-app, distinguishable by its key art adorned with the sign language symbol.
Produced by Robbie through her company LuckyChap, Gerwig was enlisted to write the script, with Noah Baumbach joining her as the co-writer. Gerwig, reflecting on her experience with the film in a recent panel discussion, shared her initial nervousness in tackling her first major-budget production, emphasizing the risk involved for both the studio and Mattel.
In a podcast interview, Gerwig expressed surprise at the film’s unexpected loyal following, noting that the communal experience it provided seemed to fulfill a shared need.
