Bender’s comeback is on the horizon as the animated sci-fi comedy series “Futurama” is set to return for an 11th season on Hulu after a decade-long hiatus. Voice actor John DiMaggio will once again lend his talents to portray the foulmouthed, human-hating robot character.
Hulu announced the reboot plans in February 2022, but there was a notable absence of John DiMaggio’s name among the long list of returning cast members. The actor had been caught in a salary negotiation deadlock with the streaming platform, which foreshadowed the ongoing discussions about streaming salaries in the entertainment industry. DiMaggio clarifies in a Zoom interview with Variety, conducted just hours before the actors are set to go on strike, that it wasn’t a case of him rejecting the offer; rather, negotiations had reached a stalemate.
The potential absence of the beloved character’s original voice sent shockwaves across social media, leading to a viral frenzy labeled as “BenderGate,” driven by John DiMaggio’s own hashtag. Addressing the concerns of passionate fans and his “Futurama” family, DiMaggio clarified that his decision was about self-respect and frustration with the corporate nature of the industry exploiting artists’ time and talent. However, after a month of fan campaigns urging a boycott of any revival without him, DiMaggio and Hulu came to a joint agreement, announcing his official return to the series.
Reflecting on the negotiation process, DiMaggio expressed the pressure he felt and his desire not to be left out of the show’s revival. Ultimately, he didn’t want the responsibility of the show’s potential demise to rest on his shoulders, especially considering the possibility of other actors stepping in to take on the role. In the end, he made the decision to return, ensuring the continuation of the beloved character and series.
In the end, despite his efforts, DiMaggio did not secure the pay increase he sought. However, he shared in May 2022 at a fan event that what he gained was a sense of respect and appreciation from those around him. People acknowledged his fight and efforts to stand up for what he believed in, even though the financial outcome wasn’t as he had hoped.
Recalling the experience, DiMaggio still takes pride in his fight, likening it to David standing up to Goliath with a sling. He did his best to ensure his side was heard and feels content with the efforts he made.
Despite the rocky start, DiMaggio’s joy in returning as the voice of Bender remains undiminished. Having portrayed the character since “Futurama’s” premiere in 1999, he is delighted that the show continues to resonate with viewers. The quirky sci-fi comedy, with its occasional tender moments, has touched people’s hearts, leaving a lasting impact on its audience.
Even after more than two decades, “Futurama” continues to stand the test of time, with even its earliest episodes holding up well when viewed from a 2023 perspective. According to DiMaggio, this lasting success is a testament to the show’s talented writers and the way they cultivate jokes. Despite including raunchy and off-color humor, “Futurama” avoids punching down and always punches up, which resonates with audiences and wins them over.
The reboot on Hulu maintains the same essence as the original, with a significant portion of the writing staff retained, around 75%, providing continuity to the series. Additionally, the new writers bring a wealth of experience, ensuring the show’s quality remains top-notch.
Amidst the ongoing strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, DiMaggio feels vindicated about his self-advocacy. The strikes align with the changes he sought and fought for, not only for himself but for everyone involved in the industry. The collective action empowers the entire community, transforming it from a one-person battle into a united front against the challenges they face.
