Craig Mazin, the talented creator behind hit HBO series like Chernobyl and The Last of Us, has spilled the beans about his exciting new project: a fresh Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
According to The LA Times, Mazin, who is both a writer and producer, confirmed that Disney had given the green light for a reboot of the beloved pirate-themed series just before the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strikes. He explained, “We pitched the idea, thinking it was too unusual for them to accept. To our surprise, they loved it! Then, Ted Elliot crafted an amazing script, but unfortunately, the strike put everything on hold.”
Disney has been eager for a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie for a while, but there’s not much info available about it yet. There were talks of a sixth film, but things got complicated when Johnny Depp, who played Jack Sparrow, faced accusations of assault and domestic abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp was removed from the project, and people thought it might be canceled, but Disney is actually planning a fresh start. They’re considering Margot Robbie from Barbie for the lead role.
Even though there were rumors that the movie got canceled, producer Jerry Bruckheimer clarified that it’s still in the works, but it’s taking some time. He mentioned that they have two different Pirate stories in development, and the other one is moving forward first. So, they’re focused on making that one happen.
Could Depp Return?
But Bruckheimer has also mentioned that he’s trying to bring Johnny Depp back as Jack Sparrow. He said, “We’re still trying to make it happen. It’s not confirmed yet, but we’re slowly making progress on the script.” However, Depp himself has said in his 2022 lawsuit against Heard that he doesn’t want to play the role of the Black Pearl’s captain again.
Orlando Bloom, the actor who played Will Turner in previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies, is excited about the idea of coming back. He’s curious to explore how Will has changed over the years, especially after spending a long time at the bottom of the ocean. He thinks it would be interesting to see how he resurfaces and what kind of person he has become.
As for Mazin’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie, there’s no set date for its release yet.
