Squid Game is making a return this year! Netflix has officially announced that the popular Korean drama series will be shown in 2024. It will premiere alongside the second seasons of The Diplomat and Empress, along with the third season of Bridgerton. In its investor letter following the financial report, Netflix shared that despite delays caused by strikes last year, they have an exciting lineup for 2024.
Squid Game premiered on Netflix on September 17, 2021, and became a huge hit worldwide. In just 28 days, the show accumulated over 1.65 billion viewing hours and attracted 111 million accounts. This made Squid Game the first Netflix series to surpass 100 million members at its launch. It still holds the record as the most-watched series ever on Netflix.
In Season 2, Lee Byung-hun is back as the Front Man, and Wi Ha-jun returns as police detective Jun-ho. Gong Yoo is also making a comeback.
The new cast features Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun, along with Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an.
Hwang Dong-hyuk is coming back to direct and oversee the second season of the show, which will begin filming this year.
The Diplomat, featuring Keri Russell, got the green light for a second season in May. This political drama, created by Debora Cahn, follows Kate Wyler (played by Russell), the new U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Kate must navigate international challenges, build important alliances in London, and adapt to her newfound public attention—all while managing her marriage to fellow diplomat and political figure Hal Wyler (played by Rufus Sewell). Cahn, Janice Williams, Russell, and Alex Graves serve as executive producers for the series.
David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh are also part of the cast.
Netflix has shared that Bridgerton, now even more “ultra-sexy,” will return in two parts: the first on May 16 and the second on June 13. This eight-episode drama is produced by Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland.
Lastly, The Empress is a German drama series that premiered in September 2022. It features Devrim Lingnau as the main character, Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, alongside Philip Froissant, Johannes Nussbaum, and Almila Bagriacik.
