New Line’s The Nun II, a standout in a fall box office affected by actor strikes, is set to premiere on Max on October 27, following its 50-day run in theaters.
Directed by Michael Chaves, the sequel within the Conjuring universe made an impressive opening with $32.6M and has now amassed $84.4M domestically and over $258M globally. The movie secured the top box office spot for three consecutive weekends and marked a successful return to the post-Labor Day horror releases that Warner Bros initially excelled in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
The film continues the story of Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) as she confronts the malevolent spirit Mother Superior, also known as Valak, who possesses the souls of those around her. Set in 1956 France, the story picks up after the events of The Nun and introduces new characters, including Maurice (Jonas Bloquet), with Storm Reid among the cast.
The Conjuring universe, spanning eight films, holds the record as the highest-grossing horror franchise, with earnings totaling $2.2 billion.
Prior to the WGA strike, a Max series set in the Conjuring universe was announced, expanding
on the stories of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson). James Wan, a key figure in the Conjuring series, was in discussions to serve as an executive producer.
Warner Bros. had previously released post-Labor Day films like It Chapter Two and the original Nun in 2018, which became the highest-grossing film in the Conjuring series, earning $366M worldwide.
