How can Squid Game season 2 up the ante after its megahit debut? According to Squid Game writer-director Hwang Dong-Hyuk, he wants an A-list Hollywood star to join the next season. His pick – Leonardo DiCaprio.
Speaking at a press conference after the Emmy Awards, Dong-Hyuk indicated that he wants to go big with a western star this time.
Here’s what he told Variety:
“There will be no known Hollywood actor in Season 2. That’s not in the plan and if the stage changes, maybe in Season 3 – but for Season 2, it is still set in Korea. Leonardo DiCaprio did say he’s a big fan of Squid Game, so maybe if time or chances allow, we can ask him to join the games.”
Leonardo DiCaprio is a good choice
Last year, the South Korean drama Squid Game took the world by storm. Its eclectic narrative that combined childhood games and a survival of the fittest battle royale hooked millions of fans worldwide to Netflix.
The streaming giant has already green-lit the sequel and wants to go bigger. Casting DiCaprio would be a great move to expand on the K-drama’s mainstream appeal.
What is planned for Squid Game Season 2?
The director let slip some minor plot details for the upcoming season. Fans can look forward to protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) as well as the antagonist the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) to return alongside the introduction of Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.
It can’t be Squid Game unless there are some new games. Fans can expect more of what made the first show a rousing success.
“Yes, there are some [new games], however, I don’t want to give any spoilers, so all I’ll say is there are going to be new games, even better games than the first season, that await.”
Will Leonardo DiCaprio join the big-budget production? Netflix has so far not announced the release date for Squid Game season 2.
