‘Barbie’ Comes to Digital, But When Will It Be on Max?

After some confusion, the digital release date for the Barbie movie is finally here! You can now almost download Barbie from an online platform!

Greta Gerwig’s incredibly popular comedy became the must-see movie of the summer. People from all over dressed up in their finest pink outfits and flocked to the theaters to watch Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling portray Barbie and Ken. So far, Barbie has raked in an astonishing $1.38 billion at the global box office, and that number is still going up.

Given its huge financial success, it might come as a surprise to some that Warner Bros. is planning to release the movie for “premium” video-on-demand, which means you’ll need to pay similar prices to what you’d pay at the movie theater, just under two months after Barbie premiered in cinemas. (Don’t worry, though, Barbie will still be showing in theaters even after the digital release, including a special one-week IMAX run starting on September 22.)

These days, it’s pretty common for movies to follow this pattern, although there are a few exceptions. Considering Barbie’s strong chances at the Oscars this year, it’s likely that Warner Bros. will make Barbie available for streaming on Max before the year is over. Here’s what you need to know about watching Barbie online and when you can expect it to be streaming on Max.

Where to watch Barbie on streaming:

Starting on Tuesday, September 12, you can get Barbie digitally on platforms like Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The cost might differ depending on where you buy it, but on Amazon Prime, it’s $29.99 to pre-order for buying. You can also rent it for 48 hours, typically priced at $24.99, although this could vary on other platforms.

When you get Barbie digitally, you’ll also get more than 30 minutes of bonus content, including featurettes like “Welcome to Barbie Land,” “Becoming Barbie,” “Playing Dress-Up,” “Musical Make Believe,” “All-Star Barbie Party,” and “It’s A Weird World.”

There’s no specific release date yet for a Barbie DVD or Blu-Ray version.

When will Barbie be streaming on Max?

Barbie is expected to arrive on Max, Warner Bros.’ streaming service, before the year ends. Warner Bros. usually releases their new movies on Max, but the timing can vary. For instance, a movie like The Flash was available for rental about five weeks after it premiered in theaters and then hit Max about five weeks later.

However, Barbie is a bigger success and a highly anticipated release, so it might take longer to reach Max. The studio waited nine weeks after Barbie first came out in theaters. So, if we follow the same pattern as The Flash, we can estimate that it will be at least another nine weeks before Barbie becomes available on Max. If we use this logic, you might see Barbie streaming on Max around mid-to-late November 2023.

Keep in mind that this is just a guess, as there isn’t an official release date for Barbie on Max yet. If you want to watch Barbie right away, you can buy or rent it online starting tomorrow.
