The stars of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” want an Emmy award. Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito spoke at the 75th Emmy Awards while presenting the Outstanding Talk Series award, expressing their desire for recognition.
“Howerton interrupted, saying, ‘Wait, what? Seventy-five years? Has the show been on for 75 years? We’ve been on since 2005. This is my first time here.”
Day inquired, “Have you guys been doing this every single year without us?” McElhenney responded, “They do. They get dressed up. They give each other awards. And in 16 seasons, we’ve never even presented before.”
Day then turned to DeVito and asked if he had ever received an Emmy award. DeVito, who played Louie De Palma in ABC’s “Taxi,” casually replied, “Yeah.” In 1981, he won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The cast quickly noted that “Taxi” ran for five years compared to the 16 seasons of “Always Sunny.”

DeVito proudly declared, “34 nominations and 18 wins. That’s why I got one of the 34.”
Olson pointed out, “Thirty-four nominations in five years versus zero nominations in 16 years? That math is bad.”
Day then wondered if the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences might have forgotten to give “Always Sunny” some trophies. McElhenney replied, “No, I won some last week. We got four for ‘Welcome to Wrexham,'” referring to his FX docuseries with Ryan Reynolds. “I went backstage and I looked for the ‘Martin’ ones and I looked for the ‘Sunny’ ones, and they didn’t have anything.”
“Okay, I’m still gonna look into it,” Day said.
Throughout its 16 seasons, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” received three Emmy nominations, all in the Creative Arts Emmy category. The FX and later FXX series was nominated for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or a Variety Program in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
The comedy series has always felt disappointed about not receiving many awards. In 2013, they even released an episode titled “The Gang Desperately Tries to Win an Award,” which is supposedly about Paddy’s Pub trying to win a local award but is clearly addressing the FX series’ lack of awards attention. The Season 9 episode playfully pokes fun at popular shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Modern Family,” and “Louie,” depicting them in a dark and risqué back room, with a rival bar that’s overly cheerful and brightly lit.
The Emmy nominees for Outstanding Talk Series included Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and Apple TV+’s “The Problem with Jon Stewart.” “The Daily Show” ultimately won the award.
Trevor Noah took a break from the series in 2022, and throughout 2023, the talk show featured a rotating lineup of guest hosts in his absence. Comedy Central has not yet announced a permanent host for the renowned show.
