At the 2024 Golden Globes, the cast of Succession celebrated their win for best drama series, marking the show’s final hurrah. Kieran Culkin, who portrayed Roman Roy, shared a moment with co-star J. Smith-Cameron before they took the stage. Nicholas Braun added a touch of Cousin Greg’s charm in his stride to join the celebration.
During his acceptance speech, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong acknowledged the collective effort behind the show’s success, expressing gratitude to the writers, directors, producers, and the dedicated crew. He recognized HBO’s support throughout the journey and reflected on the bittersweet decision to conclude the series after four seasons.
Armstrong humorously noted that the occasion was particularly significant for him because he finally had the opportunity to wear his special awards season shoes. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the recognition, making the farewell to Succession a bit sweeter.
The show faced tough competition from nominees like Yellowstone spinoff 1923, The Crown, The Diplomat, The Morning Show, and The Last of Us. Succession, a favorite after its universally acclaimed fourth season, secured the win, following its victory in the same category the previous year.
Before the ceremony, Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, and Kieran Culkin were nominated for best male actor in a television series – drama, with Culkin taking home the award. Sarah Snook won in the leading actress category for her portrayal of Siobhan Roy, while J. Smith-Cameron, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, and Alexander Skarsgård received nods for their supporting roles. Succession had previously triumphed at the 2020 Golden Globes as well.

Among the nominees was 1923, a series featuring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, a couple facing challenges in the early 20th century, whose resilience laid the foundation for the later success of their great-nephew John Dutton, portrayed by last year’s best actor winner, Kevin Costner.
Apart from the show’s nomination for best drama, Helen Mirren was recognized with a nomination in the best performance by a female actor in a television series – drama category.

Despite concluding its sixth and final season the previous month, The Crown was recognized at this weekend’s Globes for its fifth season. This season continued to depict the fictionalized account of the real-life tumult within the British royal family during the ’90s, leading up to the shocking and sudden death of Princess Diana in August 1997.
Elizabeth Debicki’s remarkable resemblance to the beloved royal, coupled with her outstanding performance, earned the Australian actress a well-deserved supporting actress trophy at this year’s ceremony. Additionally, Imelda Staunton’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II and Dominic West’s depiction of King Charles III (then the Prince of Wales) were both acknowledged in the leading categories.

Over the years, the Netflix series has received significant recognition from the Globes, securing nine out of 23 possible awards. This includes notable achievements such as winning the best drama category in 2017 and 2021. Individual cast members, including Olivia Colman for her portrayal of Elizabeth in seasons 3 and 4, Josh O’Connor as a younger Prince Charles, Emma Corin as Diana in season 4, and Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, have all received well-deserved statuettes.

The compelling chemistry between Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell in Netflix’s The Diplomat played a significant role in earning the series recognition at the Globes.
In its inaugural season, the show depicted Russell’s character, Kate Wyler, reluctantly taking on the role of U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Unbeknownst to her, success in this role would catapult her onto the fast track to becoming the Vice President of the U.S. Navigating high-stakes intrigue and deception on the global stage and within her own household, thanks to Sewell’s cunning politico Hal, added layers of complexity to the storyline.
Russell received a nomination in this year’s best drama actress category, marking nearly 25 years since she won the same award in 1999 for her breakout performance in Felicity. Her recent success in spy-themed roles, particularly her portrayal of Elizabeth Jennings in The Americans, earned her two additional Globes nods.

In 2024, The Morning Show earned its eighth and ninth Globes nominations, continuing its recognition since its debut on Apple TV+ in 2019.
Billy Crudup secured his second nomination in the drama actor category for his role in season 3. The season showcased Crudup’s character, Cory Ellison, navigating a tumultuous journey to maintain power at the fictional UBA network. Amidst the challenges, including obstacles posed by Jon Hamm’s tech innovator Paul Marks and the ambitions of Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy and Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson, Cory faced a series of explosive situations both inside and outside the company.

The first season of The Last of Us became a viral sensation, earning a drama series nomination at the Globes. Lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey also received nods for their performances.
Adapted from the 2013 video game, the HBO drama revolves around the unlikely alliance between Pedro Pascal’s rugged and troubled Joel and Bella Ramsey’s street-smart teen Ellie. Together, they navigate a post-apocalyptic world teeming with threats from zombie-like undead and even more frightening human survivors.
