Watch the Top Gun: Maverick Oscars Promo
A promotional video released on February 14 features Kimmel spoofing one of the most iconic scenes from Top Gun: Maverick.
In the video, Jon Hamm mimics a scene where Tom Cruise is asked to return to Top Gun, but instead asks Kimmel to host the Oscars again. Kimmel responds by admitting he was not expecting to be asked back.
Hamm playfully teases Kimmel, saying, “Let me be perfectly clear, you weren’t my first choice, or my second choice, or even my third, fourth, fifth or 11th choice.
In fact, we asked a lot of people before you.” The comedic exchange continues as Hamm and Chris Parnell search for a host who is unflappable and un-slappable. The promo even features a cameo by Billy Crystal. Check out the Oscar-worthy teaser below!
Who are the new seat-fillers for the Oscars 2023?
The Academy has announced a new approach for seat-filling at the 2023 awards show. In a break from tradition, members without tickets will be used as seat-fillers, in response to a suggestion from an AMPAS member who expressed dissatisfaction with the annual lottery system for tickets.
Following the suggestion made at the all-members meeting on September 17, the Academy quickly implemented several changes for the 2023 ceremony. The Academy sent out an email to members detailing the reforms, including the option for members to serve as seat-fillers.
The email stated, Regarding the Oscars, we too loved the suggestion to have members serve as seat-fillers. We will enact this for the March 12 show and will provide information later this fall about seat-filler guidelines and protocols. In addition, the member lottery will return, with PwC now overseeing the process of vetting and selection.

Who is predicted to win big at this year’s awards?
The Best Picture award is highly anticipated and traditionally announced towards the end of the Oscars ceremony, leaving viewers eager to see which movie will take home the prestigious prize. This year, Everything Everywhere All At Once has the most nominations in the major category and is the clear front-runner, but it faces tough competition from other contenders such as The Banshees of Inisherin, which has already won several awards this season, and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, a heartfelt tribute to the art of filmmaking.
However, unexpected winners have taken home the Best Picture award in the past, making All Quiet on the Western Front, a German-language war film, a dark horse candidate that could potentially win. A victory for this film would also be a significant win for streaming services, especially after CODA’s win in 2022. All Quiet on the Western Front’s chances have been boosted after it won the BAFTA Outstanding Film award in February. All 23 categories will be included in the official broadcast this year, unlike in 2022 when eight categories were presented before the televised event and then edited in.
