Dinosaur with Stephen Fry episode guide
Here is a comprehensive guide to all four episodes of Dinosaur with Stephen Fry.
Episode 1: Sunday February 12
In the first episode of Dinosaur with Stephen Fry, Stephen is transported to the Jurassic age, 155 million years ago, where he encounters the massive diplodocus and the deadly predator, the allosaurus. He examines how the diplodocus was able to stand on its hind legs to reach food in the treetops, and tests the allosaurus’ powerful bite. He also discovers the allosaurus’ use of its colorful tail to attract a mate and its size to defend against predators. Stephen marvels at the diplodocus’ sheer size, stating, “It’s 26 meters from tail to nose, which is like three double-decker buses, only longer!” He also comes across the fossilized remains of the nyasasaurus, the earliest known dinosaur. He learns about the allosaurus’ ability to open its jaw to a remarkable 79 degrees, enabling it to cause significant injury to its prey.
Episode 2: Sunday February 19
In the second episode, Stephen travels to the early Cretaceous period, 125 million years ago, during a period of increased diversity among dinosaurs. He becomes familiar with the velociraptor and encounters its larger relative, the utahraptor. He also encounters the iguanadontid, the prey of the utahraptor, and meets the paleontologist who discovered the utahraptor. Researchers also evaluate the strength of the utahraptor’s toe claws.
Episode 3: Sunday February 26
In the third episode, Stephen travels to the late Cretaceous period, where he finally encounters the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex. He observes the T-Rex hunting triceratops, scavenging for food, and even mating, and assesses the strength of its powerful bite.
Episode 4: Sunday March 5
In the final episode, Stephen joins the dinosaurs at the end of their reign, 66 million years ago. He witnesses a triceratops successfully defending itself against a T.Rex and discovers the more gentle side of the three-horned dinosaur. Unfortunately, the end of the dinosaur era is inevitable, and Stephen experiences the destruction caused by a blazing asteroid that struck the earth.

This is your own Jurassic Park. What will this show us?
As a time-traveling explorer, I immerse myself with the prehistoric animals and the experts to gain knowledge. This innovative approach to presenting science is truly exciting. The series remains faithful to the scientific accuracy while also maintaining an approachable and entertaining tone for both adults and young audiences. It was a delightful experience to interact with the dinosaurs.
Were you dinosaur mad as a boy?
As a child, I collected model dinosaurs, including a brontosaurus with its large neck, and still have some trilobite and ammonite fossils. I soon realized that fossils were for enthusiasts and not a means to make a fortune.
The CGI is pretty impressive. What was the series like to film?
During the filming of Dinosaur with Stephen Fry, the rapid advancements in computer graphics technology placed Stephen in a green screen studio surrounded by green walls and surfaces. The technology brought a new level of interactivity and realism to the series.
Do you hope to inspire kids watching with this series?
I’m aware that children have a unique connection with dinosaurs. They are often more knowledgeable than their parents and it’s a significant part of their development where they can showcase their expertise. The paleontologists I interview in this show are energetic and passionate individuals who were inspired by movies and literature and made their own groundbreaking discoveries. My main hope for the series is that it will inspire and excite young viewers as well.
Do you have a favourite dinosaur?
I’ve always had a fondness for the diplodocus, due to the perception that herbivores are generally docile creatures. However, my absolute favorite dinosaur is the triceratops. Despite its intimidating appearance with its armor-like plates and sharp horns, it’s actually a kind and gentle animal, much like a rhinoceros. I’ve had the pleasure of hand-feeding baby rhinos, and I imagine I could develop a similar bond with a triceratops.
