The showrunner has shed light on Lex Luthor’s appearance in season 3 of Superman & Lois. After a long break, one of the remaining shows in the Arrowverse is set to return this week, with the premiere of Superman & Lois season 3 on Tuesday, followed by Gotham Knights. The new season resumes the story just a few weeks after the events of season 2’s finale, and it introduces Lex Luthor as one of the new antagonists, portrayed by Michael Cudlitz. The CW has previously featured two versions of this DC villain, played by Michael Rosenbaum and Jon Cryer. The exact episode in which Lex will make his debut in the third season of Superman & Lois is still unknown.

During a recent interview with KryptonSIte, Todd Helbing, the showrunner of Superman & Lois, gave a sneak peek into the arrival of Lex Luthor. A major query that came up was why they decided to bring Lex in for season 3. Helbing explained that the main reason was that they had finally received approval to include Lex Luthor in the show. However, Helbing also emphasized that their focus was initially on other antagonists before ultimately introducing Lex, and he conveyed the following:
We got permission. We wanted to tackle some different villains and sort of separate ourselves a little bit, but we felt like as soon as we could get Lex, to bring him in, he’s the villain. He is Superman’s guy, and when we finally got permission to use him, we came up with a take, and everybody at DC and Warner Brothers and The CW were stoked with what we are going to try to do. We were super, super fortunate and excited to have Michael Cudlitz [who is playing Lex.].
Everything We Know About Superman & Lois’ Lex Luthor
Given that Michael Cudlitz is playing Lex Luthor on Superman & Lois, his version of the character will inevitably differ from Jon Cryer’s portrayal on Earth-Prime. As per The CW and Warner Bros. TV, this iteration of Lex is described as a “brutal psychopath,” suggesting that he has taken a darker turn. When Lex eventually appears in season 3 of Superman & Lois, it will have been years since he was last seen publicly. It’s not yet clear whether this means he has been in hiding or imprisoned.
Lex Luthor, notorious for instilling fear in anyone who crosses him, is poised to make a return with a score to settle. As per the casting news for Superman & Lois, he is determined to right a personal wrong and take revenge on two specific individuals, namely Lois Lane and Superman themselves. It’s currently unclear whether this version of Lex Luthor is aware of Clark’s dual identity as Superman.
While it remains uncertain when Lex Luthor will make his appearance in season 3 of Superman & Lois, it’s expected that he will feature in a few episodes. The bigger question is whether he will be linked to Bruno Mannheim, one of the season’s main antagonists. As Superman & Lois season 3 progresses, fans are eagerly anticipating a glimpse of Michael Cudlitz’s iteration of Lex.
