While an official release date for Bridgerton Season 3 is yet to be announced, it has been confirmed that certain beloved characters will not be making a comeback. Following Julia Quinn’s book series, each season of the Netflix adaptation centers around a different Bridgerton sibling. However, the show has taken some creative liberties, as seen in Season 2 with Eloise’s romantic storyline with a new character named Theo Sharpe. In Season 3, the focus will shift to Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, deviating from the book’s emphasis on Benedict Bridgerton.
Bridgerton gained immense popularity with its first season, which revolved around the eldest Bridgerton daughter and the enigmatic Duke of Hastings, Simon. The success continued in Season 2, delving into the story of Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma. Additionally, Shonda Rhimes is working on a Bridgerton prequel titled “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” which will explore the lives of Queen Charlotte and King George. With both the prequel and the anticipated Season 3 on the horizon, it promises to be a significant year for Bridgerton, introducing both returning and new characters. However, it should be noted that some familiar faces will be absent in Season 3.
Daphne Bridgerton
Despite Daphne Bridgerton’s central role in Season 1, where she found love with the Duke of Hastings and ventured away from the Bridgerton household, her presence in Season 2 took a backseat as the focus shifted to Anthony Bridgerton. However, Daphne still played a significant part in assisting Anthony in his pursuit of love and navigating his feelings for Kate Sharma. Additionally, she showcased the growth of her relationship with Simon by bringing their first child to the family home.
Recently, Phoebe Dynevor, the actress who portrays Daphne, confirmed that she will not be reprising her role for Season 3 of Bridgerton. In an interview with Screen Rant, Dynevor expressed her excitement to watch the upcoming season as a viewer and revealed that she is open to the possibility of returning for Season 4. Given Dynevor’s rise to fame following the success of Bridgerton Season 1, it is understandable that she would want to explore other opportunities now that Daphne will no longer be a prominent character in future Bridgerton seasons.
Duke Simon Basset
Another prominent cast member from Season 1 who will not be making an appearance in Bridgerton Season 3 is Regé-Jean Page, known for his role as Simon, the Duke of Hastings. Although Daphne made a return in Season 2, Simon did not join his Season 1 co-star, impacting Daphne’s role as well. The unique format of Bridgerton, which focuses on a different Bridgerton sibling each season, would have limited Simon’s involvement even if he had returned. By the end of Season 1, Simon’s personal struggles with drinking and his fear of fatherhood were resolved, leaving little room for further character development.
Page himself has been thriving since his departure from Bridgerton. He has appeared in Netflix’s The Gray Man and recently secured a role in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. While there were rumors circulating about Page’s possible return as Simon following his absence in Season 2, it has been confirmed that he will not be reprising the character in Bridgerton Season 3. With Simon and Daphne no longer residing in the Bridgerton household, the narrative does not provide much opportunity for their storyline as a couple or as individuals.
Edwina Sharma
Charithra Chandran, who portrayed Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton Season 2, will not be reprising her role for Season 3. Edwina’s storyline in Season 2 revolved around her arrival in London with the goal of finding a suitable marriage to secure financial stability for her family. Initially set to marry Anthony Bridgerton, Edwina discovered that he had fallen in love with her sister, Kate, and ultimately supported their union. Although she faced challenges and realized Anthony’s true feelings on her wedding day, Edwina gracefully stepped aside and backed her sister’s happiness.
Towards the end of Bridgerton Season 2, Queen Charlotte approached Edwina, who was regarded as the diamond of the social season, and revealed the availability of a Prince as a potential match for her. It is implied that Edwina will have the opportunity to meet the Prince and potentially find love. As Edwina’s story aligns more closely with external characters and she is not a Bridgerton sibling, there seems to be no further avenue for her narrative exploration, especially in Season 3. In an interview with Indian Express, Charithra Chandran confirmed her absence from Season 3 and shared that she is currently involved in filming a new movie project.
Other Bridgerton Characters Who May Not Return In Season 3
There are speculations regarding the potential absence of some fan-favorite characters in Bridgerton Season 3. One such character is Theo Sharpe, who served as a working-class love interest for Eloise Bridgerton in Season 2. Their relationship concluded during that season, and since Bridgerton generally adheres closely to the book series, a rekindling of their romance is more likely to occur in a season focused on Eloise’s love life. Another character, Jack Featherington, played a significant role in Season 2 as he schemed against the Ton. However, as he was sent away during that season, it seems unlikely that he will return.
Similarly, the return of Marina Thompson in Season 3 appears unlikely. Marina’s storyline primarily revolved around her involvement with Colin Bridgerton, and their story found closure in her brief appearance in Season 2. While Marina may be mentioned, her significant role is more likely to come into play when Eloise’s narrative takes center stage. Lastly, Edmund Bridgerton had a role in Anthony’s flashbacks in Season 2 and played a crucial part in Anthony’s struggles with love. As Anthony’s issues have been resolved, it seems improbable that Edmund will make a return in Bridgerton Season 3.
It should be noted that these are speculations, and official announcements regarding the returning characters for Season 3 have not been made.
