Ever since the dream-like debut (pardon the pun) of The Sandman on Netflix this month, fans have been knocking on the door of creator Neil Gaiman. They want to know – whats the update on The Sandman Season 2?
Despite the astronomical success of the show, which follows the adventures of the Lord of Dreams Morpheus and his family of The Endless, news regarding the show’s renewal has not been forthcoming. And like the master storyteller that he is, Gaiman has settled on teasing fans with his ‘will-they-or-won’t-they’ demeanor.
Until now that is.
What is The Sandman?
The Sandman is an epic comic book series by Neil Gaiman set in the DC universe. It starts with Lord Morpheus, the King of Dreams, imprisoned on Earth after a ritual gone wrong. The epic story deals with how a diety like Dream regains his powers back, and how his time among humans has changed him and his family after a century of ruling unchecked in their respective dimensions.
Our dreams have the power to reshape our reality in ways that we never think about. The Sandman approaches this concept in many ways, reminding us of the power that dreams hold over us.

The 16-issue magnum opus is remembered fondly for its thought-provoking and dark storylines that combine the real and fantasy worlds. It was long considered one of those intellectual properties that could never be adapted for TV.
But Neil’s personal involvement as a producer and screenwriter, along with a superstar cast in Tom Sturridge (who plays Morpheus), has won over a new generation of fans.
“We have adapted, so far, 400 pages out of 3,000,” Gaiman told the BBC.
How popular is The Sandman on Netflix?
Critics love it! With a rating of 85% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, it is performing extremely well with audiences worldwide. Morpheus’ adventures quickly hit the #1 spot on Netflix during its debut. It stayed there for a week until the comedy series Never Have I Ever dethroned it.
With fan interest in The Sandman Season 2 refusing to die down, it is only a matter of time before the inevitable announcement is made.
Neil Gaiman has indicated that he could shop the show to another streamer if Netflix isn’t game for the next season.
While the series relies on high fantasy tropes rather than crime thrillers like Breaking Bad, the foundation for an enduring storyline has been laid down. The creators can now focus on character arcs more since the world has been fully fleshed out for TV viewers.
We all want to see the explosive Lucifer vs Morpheus rematch right? Here’s to hoping fan prayers greenlight The Sandman Season 2! Gaiman and his screenwriting partner David S. Goyer indicate that fans are not prepared for what happens next when Hell clashes with the ruler of The Dreaming.
