Greg Daniels may be revisiting The Office, but it won’t involve a complete reimagining of Michael Scott and the Dunder Mifflin team with an entirely new cast. Although The Office was initially a reimagining of a British comedy series, Daniels, the creator of the American version, is emphasizing that there are no plans for a straightforward reboot. Recent reports suggested a potential reboot with Daniels on board. In an update shared with TheWrap, Daniels clarified that he doesn’t want to label the potential new show as a “reboot” because it wouldn’t replicate the same concept with a different cast. Instead, if the project moves forward, it would likely exist in the same world as The Office but with fresh characters.
“I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot, you know what I mean? Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully,” Daniels explained. “The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

Daniels teased that the follow-up series could ideally be set in the same universe as the original show, comparing it to The Mandalorian introducing new stories in the Star Wars universe. He mentioned the possibility of a documentary crew focusing on a different subject. However, he admitted uncertainty about the appropriate term for such a project, emphasizing that “reboot” wouldn’t be fitting.
The Office, adapted from the British series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, became a major success on NBC, running for nine seasons and earning numerous awards. The mockumentary series, centered around the employees of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, featured a stellar ensemble cast, including Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and many others. The show is available for streaming on Peacock.
