Even though he is “in awe” of directors like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, the Marvel actor added that “they don’t get to point their nose at me or anyone.”
Simu Liu is tired of hearing critics argue for or against the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Simu Liu responded on Twitter the same day that Quentin Tarantino’s remarks criticising the “Marvel-ization” of Hollywood went viral, criticising the “Pulp Fiction” director and Martin Scorsese for their criticisms of the MCU.
Liu, whose 2021 film “Shang-Chi” made history as the first Marvel film with an Asian lead and brought in more than $432 million at the global box office, claimed that if Tarantino and Scorsese were the only gatekeepers to movie stardom, she would never have had the chance to star in a $400 million or more budgeted film. “Their filmmaking genius had me in awe. They are auteurs of transcendence. However, they are not permitted to make fun of me or anyone else.”
In a recent episode of the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast, Tarantino claimed that Marvel actors aren’t true movie stars. Liu responds to Tarantino’s claim. When he added, “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have gotten famous portraying these characters,” Tarantino was making the point that Marvel Studios is driven more by intellectual property than true star power. They are not nevertheless movie stars. Right?
The protagonist is Captain America. or the star is Thor… These franchise characters are the ones who get fame.
Prior to becoming a household name thanks to “Shang-Chi,” Liu had little TV parts. He appeared on two episodes of “Celebrity Jeopardy!” this year and provided the voice of Homer on “The Simpsons.”
