Korean actor O Yeong-su, who recently starred in the fan-favorite drama Squid Game has been charged with sexual misconduct. According to the charge sheet, the incident happened in 2017.
The 77-year-old actor, who achieved mainstream fame in 2022, was let go without detention by The Seongnam branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors Office. These developments were reported by the Yonhap News Agency.
The allegation against O Yeong-su
The complaint against O Yeong-su was filed in December 2021. The alleged victim requested that the case be reopened after it was closed in April.
Yeong-su has denied the accusations. He told Korea’s JTBC network that, “I just held her hand to guide the way around the lake. I apologized because [the person] said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it but it doesn’t mean that I admit the charges.”
An official in charge of the case told AFP that reports in the press against the elderly actor “is not factually incorrect.” The Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office refused to give more details. Some reports allege that a public commercial with the actor was pulled off air after he was charged.
Squid Game role
Yeong-su reportedly played the role of an elderly man Oh ll-nam in Squid Game. He won the 2022 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series.
He was elated by the win. “Embracing the scent of our culture and the love for my family. Thank all of you in the world. I wish you a beautiful life.”
Squid Game has been renewed for a second season, with creator Hwang Dong-hyuk saying that the survival series will return with Seong Gi-hun and The Front Man. There is no word yet if O Yeong-su will be making an appearance in the new season, especially given his fate in the inaugural season.
