Netflix enthusiasts are generating considerable buzz by asserting that they’ve discovered a “hidden gem” they believe surpasses the popularity of ‘Game of Thrones.’
‘Game of Thrones,’ based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire,’ is a renowned US fantasy drama portraying the intricate power dynamics among influential families, rulers, knights, and rogues vying for dominance over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Running from 2011 to 2019, it stands as HBO’s most-watched series, boasting 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, the highest ever for a drama series. The stellar cast included Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Aidan Gillen.
Despite its immense success, Netflix users are drawing comparisons with another series, a pirate adventure saga, which they assert is superior to ‘Game of Thrones.’
Known as “Black Sails,” this series serves as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless novel, ‘Treasure Island.’
The STARZ production revolves around the adventures of Captain Flint, renowned throughout the West Indies as the most cunning and feared pirate of the Golden Age.
In the year 1715, Captain Flint grapples with the challenge of preserving New Providence Island, a decadent haven swarming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves, and fortune seekers. Confronting threats from British and Spanish forces, Flint allies with Eleanor Guthrie, the daughter of a local kingpin, as they embark on a quest for the ultimate prize to ensure the survival of their people.
However, their path is obstructed by rival captains, Eleanor’s overbearing father, and a formidable obstacle in the form of John Silver – a young, quick-witted sailor who has recently joined Flint’s crew, known for his defiance of authority and silver-tongued persuasions.
Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Tom Hopper, “Black Sails” lasted for four seasons, a shorter run compared to the eight seasons of “Game of Thrones.” However, Netflix viewers are asserting that it occasionally surpasses “Game of Thrones” in quality.
With its upcoming availability on UK Netflix next year, one fan expressed their excitement on Twitter: “Black Sails is finally on Netflix, and if you haven’t seen it, it’s better than Game of Thrones; it’s a proper 10/10 show.”
Another enthusiast commented, “I’ll never stop recommending Black Sails. It’s Game of Thrones but with pirates.”
While acknowledging that “Game of Thrones” has superior episodes on average due to its larger budget and broader cast, some viewers argue that “Black Sails” excels at its best moments. They note the series’ strength in maintaining a ‘no heroes’ approach, with characters primarily looking out for their interests, unlike the eventual shift in “Game of Thrones” towards a more traditional good vs. evil narrative.
“Black Sails” is scheduled to arrive on UK Netflix on January 1st.
