Mattel announced on Wednesday that Melissa Benoist, known for her role in “Supergirl,” will voice the character Teela in Netflix’s upcoming animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revolution.”
The show is set to premiere on the streaming platform in 2024 and also features an impressive cast, including Benoist’s husband Chris Wood as He-Man, Mark Hamill as the villainous Skeletor, and William Shatner in an unannounced role.
Benoist expressed her excitement about working with her friend Kevin Smith and being a part of the “Revolution” family, saying she is eager to reveal the next chapter of Teela’s story to viewers.
The upcoming animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revolution,” set to follow 2021’s “Revelation,” features Teela, He-Man, and the rest of the Masters as they fight to rescue Eternia from the clutches of darkness. In “Revelation,” Teela was voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar, known for her roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Wolf Pack.” According to the show’s logline, “Revolution” offers a fresh take on the classic rivalry between He-Man and Skeletor, with technology pitted against magic in the epic battle for Eternia.
Fred Soulie, senior VP and general manager at Mattel Television, expressed excitement about Melissa Benoist joining the cast as Teela, stating that she embodies the character’s formidable personality and showcases the same heart as she did in “Supergirl.” He believes that Benoist will bring a new interpretation of this classic character, synonymous with strength and heroism, to audiences. This announcement comes as He-Man is celebrating its 40th anniversary and has become more popular in pop culture than ever before.
Melissa Benoist has collaborated with Kevin Smith on two previous occasions, having appeared in his films “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” and “Clerks III.” She also worked with her husband Chris Wood on earlier seasons of “Supergirl,” where Wood played the superhero Mon-El. Benoist’s upcoming project is the HBO Max series “The Girl on the Bus,” and her past credits include the role of Marley in “Glee,” as well as appearances in movies such as “Whiplash” and “Patriots Day.”
The animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” is executive produced by Mattel’s Fred Soulie, Rob David, and Christopher Keenan, along with Kevin Smith and Ted Biaselli.
