An update for The Flintstones is currently in the works at Fox, and Elizabeth Banks has shared some new details about it. Banks, known for directing Cocaine Bear, is serving as an executive producer for the new Flintstones series called Bedrock. The show will primarily focus on an adult Pebbles Flintstone, and Banks will also provide the voice for Pebbles.
During a recent interview with TVLine, Banks clarified that Bedrock is still in the development phase. She expressed her excitement about playing Pebbles and mentioned that they are actively working on the project.
While the animated series follows an older version of Pebbles, it is not specifically targeted towards adult audiences like Mindy Kaling’s Scooby-Doo spinoff Velma. Banks explained that Bedrock is intended to be enjoyed by both children and adults, allowing families to watch it together. However, she did hint that the show may have a touch of edginess similar to The Simpsons.
“Oh, I think we still want it to be something that parents can watch with their kids,” Banks explains. “It will touch on adult themes, like other popular shows such as The Simpsons or South Park, but it will be ‘family-ish friendly.’ I mean, I let my kids watch South Park…”
When playfully asked if that means Bamm-Bamm won’t be dealing with erectile dysfunction in the series, Banks responded, “Not that I know of at the moment!”
Meet the Flintstones… Again
Over the past few decades, there have been various adaptations of The Flintstones on both the big and small screens. Bedrock is the latest addition to this collection. While the characters will be older in this version, all the familiar fan favorites will still be present. It was announced in March that Elizabeth Banks will voice Pebbles, and the cast includes Stephen Root as Fred Flintstone, Amy Sedaris as Wilma Flintstone, Nicole Byer as Betty Rubble, Joe Lu Truglio as Barney Rubble, and Manny Jacinto as Bamm-Bamm.
According to the show’s synopsis, Bedrock picks up with Fred nearing retirement and Pebbles, now in her twenties, starting her own career. As the Stone Age transitions into a shiny new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution more challenging than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.
Elizabeth Banks serves as an executive producer alongside Lindsay Kerns, Max Handelman, and Sam Register. Lindsay Kerns is also the writer and co-executive producer, while Lon Zimmet is an executive producer.
Michael Thorn, Fox’s president of entertainment, expressed excitement about Bedrock, stating, “Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog, or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock. Their impact on the animation world is undeniable, and we at Fox are thrilled to adapt it for today’s audience with Warner Bros., Elizabeth, and Lindsay. No pressure at all, really.”
The premiere date for Bedrock on Fox has yet to be announced.
