Brendan Gleeson is the fourth cast member joining the sequel to 2019’s Joker. He will be starring alongside other critically-acclaimed stars such as Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, and Zazie Beetz. Lady Gaga and Gleeson are the newest entries to the franchise while Beetz and Phoenix are reprising their roles from the earlier movie.
Todd Philips’ Joker was envisioned as an alternative take on the Clown Prince of Crime. It was intended as a standalone film. However, its success as a smash hit has made the director as well as the studio reconsider the possibility of doing a follow-up.
To date, Joker has grossed over $1 billion at the box office.

Mainstream press outlets report the Joker sequel, also known as Joker: Folie à Deux, is intended to be a musical. That will make it the first comic book mainstream movie to dabble in a different genre.
Here’s what Beetz says about the new approach. “I actually think it makes wonderful sense. I wasn’t really surprised by that. Todd [Phillips] has always had a creative approach to the character. I love musicals, and I think of them as the characters are feeling and experiencing so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sorrow or in joy. And so I can see Arthur [Fleck], who is feeling and experiencing so much, dancing and singing about it. He’s the Joker, so I think it makes sense to me.”
Joker 2 is not in the same continuity of other DCEU films like The Flash and Justice League. It exists as its own thing.
