Disney+ has decided not to renew “American Born Chinese” for a second season, as reported by Variety. Despite Disney’s positive reception of the show’s creative aspects, the viewership didn’t meet the threshold for greenlighting another season. The producers intend to explore other outlets to continue the series.
Based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, “American Born Chinese” premiered on Disney+ in May. The series, part of Disney Branded Television, follows the life-changing journey of a typical American teenager who befriends the son of a mythological god.
The cast featured Ben Wang, Michelle Yeoh, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Jimmy Liu, Ke Huy Quan, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu. Despite receiving favorable reviews, with a 94% approval rating from 51 critics for the first season, the show will not continue on Disney+.
Kelvin Yu, who developed and served as the showrunner, and executive producers like Destin Daniel Cretton, Melvin Mar, and Jake Kasdan, along with Gene Luen Yang, Erin O’Malley, and Asher Goldstein, were involved in the production. The cancellation news comes shortly after the launch of “The Brothers Sun” on Netflix, also featuring Michelle Yeoh. Additionally, Ke Huy Quan recently appeared in “Loki” Season 2 on Disney+. Destin Daniel Cretton is currently working on the upcoming Marvel-Disney+ series “Wonder Man” as co-creator, director, and executive producer.
