You say you’re a self-confessed Scrooge. So why do you dislike Christmas?
Miriam complains that Christmas is “too commercial” and that the holiday starts too early in the year. She also dislikes how much pressure there is to spend money on gifts, saying that it can make people who don’t get along feel uncomfortable. However, she admits that sharing a meal with friends and loved ones is wonderful.
What were your Christmases like growing up in a Jewish household?
Miriam’s parents were not Orthodox Jews. However, her father disliked Christmas. He refused to have a Christmas tree or any decorations in the house. However, Miriam’s mother believed they should think about people who didn’t have a family during this holiday season and be generous. This meant that they would invite lonely misfits every year for Christmas lunch. According to Miriam’s memories, it was always about food and kindness.”
Do you mark Christmas Day now?
Miriam confesses: “We don’t celebrate Christmas at all! My partner, Heather, and I completely forego any traditions whatsoever. We might have sandwiches and phone up friends like we do any other day. We refuse to let Christmas take over our lives with the hectic entertaining and present buying. The one tradition I do enjoy, though, is pantomimes. My friend Bobby Crush will be in Aladdin at Esher Theatre this year, so that’s something to look forward to!”
